Important Update from Mrs. Cherevaty: Reading Program - Snuggle Up/Reading Comp. Questions/Spelling

Dear Parents,
Happy Monday!
Today students will start to self select books from our classroom reading centre. This week, students will practice taking home books and returning them to school the next day. Starting next week, students will begin to take home levelled books based on their current reading level. You will know it is a levelled book because you will see a letter on the title page (e.g. letter H). Your child will take home a levelled book 1-2 times per week; the other books will be self-selected. Students who are reading chapter books will take their book home for a longer period of time, and will return them once they've read the entire book. On the nights your child brings home a levelled book, please encourage them to read it to you while working on some reading strategies (e.g., chucking words, looking for blends, prefixes & suffixes, using their finger to cover up parts of the word to sound it out, looking for smaller words inside of bigger words, etc.). On the nights when you child brings home a self-selected book, you can read it to them, read the book together (taking turns) or your child can read it to you. Reading logs will start again next Monday.
It is important that the books are well cared for and returned on time. The levelled books belong to the school, and the entire school needs them for their reading program. The self selected books belong to me. I would appreciate your help in caring for them, so we can continue to use them as a class. 

Re Spelling: Starting this week and continuing to the end of the year, students will get two extra challenge words. These challenge words are words that students regularly use in their writing. I will only be formally marking the first 5 words, but students are encouraged to try their best and spell all words. The goal is for students to regularly spell their words correctly in their writing and not memorized them for the test. I will no longer send home extra sentence sheets. If students would like to practice writing paragraphs, short stories, and sentences at home using their spelling words, they can be encouraged to do so. Note: Students will be writing sentences each week as part of one of their writing/reading centres.

I am sending home reading comprehension questions that you can ask your child on a nightly     basis about their take home books. I am advising that you ask your child 2-3 questions per night in order to ensure understanding of the text they have read. Thanks for your help.

Reading Comprehension Questions

  1. Re-tell the story in your own words?
  1. What happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story?
  1. What was your favourite part? Why?
  1. What was your least favourite part? Why?
  1. Where does the story take place? What is the setting? Describe the setting for me?
  1. What does this story remind you of? (E.g. a place you have been, a story you have read, a person in your life, etc.)
  1. What was the problem in the story?
  1. What was the solution in the story?
  1. What type of book is this? (fiction or non-fiction) How do you know?
  1. Who is the main character in the story? Describe the main character?
  1.   Who are the characters in the story?
  ~ Use Who? What? When? Where? Why? in questions.

Hello Grade 1 Parents - Note from Ms. Cherevaty April 4th, 2016


Hello Grade One Parents,

As you already know, my name is Mrs. Cherevaty, but Mrs. C works for me too! I am excited to be back at Rosethorn, and I am looking forward to getting to know your children better in the next few weeks. I was lucky to have had regular correspondence with Ms. G throughout the school year, as well as the chance to sit down with her last Tuesday to discuss the students, curriculum and next steps. I know it is not always easy to have two teachers within one school year, but I will try my best to make it a positive transition for all. I look forward to meeting all the classroom parents informally over the next few weeks. 

An April Calendar went home with your children last week. One new item to note on the calendar is that we will be joining Mme. Suichies group on a class trip to Willowgrove Farm. It will take place on Friday, April 29th. A permission form will be going home shortly and parent volunteers will be welcomed/needed. 

Also, we will be working on different forms of writing over the next few months. In the next few weeks students will be creating pet rocks, and then they will be writing procedures on how they made them. Students are being asked to bring in a rock (roughly the size of their fist) by Friday, April 8th.
 
I am currently working on creating new reading groups that will work with my reading program. I am asking students (parents) to keep their Snuggle Up and Read bag at home until next Monday (April 11th). Starting next Monday, students will be able to independently choose books from the reading centre to take home each night (I have a collection new of books that I will be putting out this week). However, on the days that your child reads with me in a group they will take home a levelled book. Students will be encouraged to return their borrowed book to school the next day. If the book is not returned no new books can go home.
